How to Choose the Right Industrial Lighting for Warehouses and Production

Choosing the right industrial lighting is about more than swapping fixtures. The right solution lowers energy costs, improves the working environment and reduces maintenance for many years. Start with the requirements, not the product
Before you look at fixtures, map out how the space is used. A high-bay warehouse with narrow aisles has very different needs than an assembly line or a workshop doing fine detail work. The first three questions to answer are ceiling height, visual tasks and operating hours.
Ceiling height determines whether you need high bay or low bay fixtures. Read efficiency correctly: lm/W
The most common purchasing mistake is comparing on watts. What actually determines energy efficiency is lumens per watt (lm/W), meaning how much light the fixture delivers per watt consumed. Modern high bay fixtures often deliver 140 to 170 lm/W. Always compare the system efficacy of the whole fixture, not just the light source, and check that the lumen figure applies after the optics and cover.
Match IP and IK rating to the environment
The IP rating describes protection against dust and water. In dry warehouses IP20 to IP54 is often enough, but in dusty production areas, cold stores or wash bays you should choose at least IP65. The IK rating describes mechanical impact resistance, which matters where forklifts and material handling are present. Choose IK08 or higher in exposed locations.
Controls deliver the biggest savings
Switching to LED alone reduces consumption significantly, but lighting controls are often what take the saving from good to excellent. With occupancy detection and daylight harvesting, fixtures only light up when and where needed. In warehouses with uneven activity, aisle-by-aisle zoning can cut energy use by a further 30 to 60 percent. Make sure the fixtures are compatible with DALI or a wireless control system if you want that flexibility.
Quality, warranty and thermal management
An LED fixture is only as good as its weakest component. The driver and cooling determine how long the fixture holds its light output, because LED chips suffer from high heat. So look at how the fixture dissipates heat and which temperature class it is approved for. A good industrial fixture should handle warm production environments without shortening its lifespan. Also check that the product is CE marked and has relevant documentation, and read the warranty terms carefully. A five-year warranty or longer is reasonable to expect for professional high bay fixtures, provided the fixture is used within its specified ambient temperature.
Plan the light before you buy
A common mistake is ordering fixtures without a lighting calculation. With a simple Dialux-style calculation you can see how many fixtures are needed, how they should be placed and whether you meet the uniformity requirements. The right placement determines whether you get shadows between the shelf rows or an even light across the whole floor. For warehouses with tall pallet racks it is often better to aim the fixtures along the aisles than to spread them evenly across the ceiling, because that puts light down between the shelves where the work happens.
